IВ spoke with two developers whose work has been influenced by NintendoвЂ™s polygonal debut and one who actually wrote some of the code for the original game himself. But a generation of developers who grew up playing as Fox McCloud and saving Slippy Toad are now taking us flying in their own kind of cockpit. In many ways, the gaming industry has moved on, exploring wide open spaces and never-ending universes instead of Star FoxвЂ™s tight, corridor-based dog-fighting action. 'All three of us game side programmers had a hand in everything basically. After a propulsive start, Star Fox has become something of an enigma: Rabid fans clamor for new entries and in-game quotations permeate the popular culture, all in the face of mixed critical and commercial success for the rare new title.

A sequel on the Nintendo 64 would cement the franchiseвЂ™s place in the Nintendo canon.Д«ut the series would only produce four more original games in the two decades since.

The experiment was a grand success: In June of 1993, Nintendo touted Star Fox as вЂњ the fastest-selling video game in history,вЂќ with 1.7 million sales in Japan and the U.S. вЂњI think it was sort of an experiment for Nintendo,вЂќ says Giles Goddard, one of the gameвЂ™s main programmers, вЂњto see whether a 3D game would sell.вЂќ It was Nintendo's first real foray into 3D gaming and the start of a years-long push of squeezing every ounce of power out of their aging 16-bit hardware.ДЄs Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn loomed, here was Nintendo, with the help of technical wiz kids from EnglandвЂ™s Argonaut Software, pushing the kinds of polygonal graphics onto home television screens that until that point had only been seen in arcades orВ high-powered PCs. It was a very important, often overlooked detail that made cinematic history.Twenty-five years ago this month, Star Fox for SNES released in North America. Lucas wanted the fanfare so bad that he even had John Williams write the Star Wars theme in the same key as the Fox fanfare, which may add to the reason that it's become a part of the Star Wars franchise, it was treated as an extension. The filmmaker insisted it be played before A New Hope, and the fanfare began to flourish shortly after. The theme, originally composed in 1933 by Fox music director Alfred Newman, may have very well faded into obscurity by the 1970s had George Lucas not taken a particularly liking to it. The option is there for Disney to bring back the legendary fanfare and attach it to Star Wars 9, but will Disney even consider it now that they own it, that's the real question. The MGM lion was okay, but he/she wasn't attached to the power of George Lucas' Star Wars, a franchise that shook the world. Never before has studio fanfare been so iconic. Star Wars fans of a certain age have missed the Fox fanfare ever since Disney took over.
